Dear GCS family members, Thank you to those of you who came to the picnic last Sunday . We had a great turnout even though it was a rainy day. I am especially grateful to those of you who helped to make this event so successful. I’d like to thank Chairman James and his family for arriving at 10:30am to make sure the site open and ready, Recreation Leader Thomas for standing next to the stove most of the time and grilling the delicious food, and Joseph Su for taking pictures that preserve this special event. Thanks to families who brought delicious food to share as a big family. Also, thanks to Wells Wu who wrote a nice article about this picnic which was published in Chinese newspaper http://washingtonchinesenews.net/images/file/paper/2013/WCN1019B08.pdf. This was definitely a successful picnic. I just want to express how thankful I am for everyone’s effort. As I reported during the picnic, our Chinese food fundraising sold more than $2000, meaning that our school will receive close to 500 dollars! It was great teamwork that we raised so many funds for our school. I’d like to specially thank our Treasurer Chao Sung Yu who helped collect the money, process purchase orders, and organize the packages for each family. In this letter, I would like to tell you the story of how GCS became the designated multimedia and digitalized learning center in the Washingtonian metropolitan area. Due to the length of this letter, I may not go in the full details of the story but I can still give you a glimpse how this impacts us. The multimedia and digitalized learning has been going for years. Back in 2011, the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) of ROC was looking for a Chinese school that would be able and willing to promote multimedia and digitalized learning in the traditional Chinese language and culture. Thanks to Dr. ChangYu Wang and former Principal Vincent’s efforts, GCS got selected. Ever since we were designated as the learning center, we have held several multimedia Chinese learning activities that involve all Washington Metropolitan Chinese Schools. For example, we have held Lantern painting, Gourd painting, Chinese song karaoke contest, Chinese cultural presentations and global digitalized training for Chinese teachers. The teachers in our school have been trained to use an electronic homework page to share information with parents. Also, some teachers have used multimedia to help students enhance their Chinese learning. Some teachers have created websites to communicate teaching material, homework and resources with students. As I reported in the Parents’ meeting, our digitalized goal of this year is for students to record their reading as a voice file and submit to their teacher as homework. For students in elementary school, we may need parents’ help to do the recording homework. What I described above is just a brief summary of what we have accomplished, and needless to say there were a lot of efforts involved. We want to provide a learning environment where our children will enjoy learning Chinese language and culture that will accompany them for the rest of their life. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or comments regarding our multimedia and digitalized learning. Best regards, Hueling Evans |
