Dear  GCS family members,

There are many holidays and celebrations right after school starts every year. Three of our High A students, Yi Xuen Moh, Emily Wang, and Ryan Jiau, represented GCS for the Washington Metropolitan Association of Chinese School poster design contest in celebrating Teachers' Day and Confucius' birthday and Teachers' Day. Not only that they received certificate and cash award for their excellent work, but also that they learn a great deal of the history of Confucius' contribution to the Chinese education. We also celebrate Teachers' Day and Confucius' birthday at school last Sunday during the snack time. Students, teachers, and parents had the opportunity to taste a cake and mooncakes. I hope everyone had a wonderful moon festival last Sunday and enjoy some quality time celebrating this traditional Chinese cultural holiday with your family.

The Fall semester is entering the fourth week this Sunday. Both language and cultural classes have well into the planned curriculum. I would like to kindly remind you that we will have parents' meeting at 2:10 pm this Sunday at the Quince Orchard High School cafeteria. This is an opportunity for parents to learn more about school's situation and direction and, at the same time, I and the Board would love to hear from you if you have any suggestion to help Gaithersburg Chinese School grow and improve. I am looking forward to seeing you at the parents' meeting this Sunday.

Additionally, we will have our annual Fall picnic on October 11, 2015 at the Black Hill regional Park, Shelter C. This is a great opportunity for GCS families to know each other better outside the school building. School and the GCS Board will prepare hot dogs, hamburgers, fried rice, and water. This picnic is considered as part of the curriculum so that all students are requested to come. Please bring one or two (or more) of your specialty dishes to share with others. Your entire family, extended family, and/or any GCS alumni you can reach are more than welcome to celebrate this outing together with us. If you know someone who is interested in learning Chinese, please bring them to this event so that they can see the other side of GCS. There are open fields and playground at the park. Please bring sports and lawn games that you and your children can share and play with others. Attached please find the picnic flyer.

To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the formal end of World War II in the Pacific, a conflict that tragically claimed millions of lives across Asia and Oceania and stretched several months beyond the war’s conclusion in the European theater, our High A teacher, Dr. Tung-Chin Chiang, specially invited a well-known historian and novelist, Dr. Jeffery Chen, to come to our school on October 18 at 2 p.m. at Quince Orchard High School cafeteria to give a seminar on this historical events that impacted millions of Chinese, both in Taiwan and Mainland. The target audience for his talk will be for our High A and B students so that Dr. Chen will use both English and Mandarin Chinese in his speech. All parents and friends of GCS are welcome and encouraged to attend.

It is October; Christmas and New Year holidays are not that far from now. Have you thought of handcrafted decorations as holiday gift this year? Our GCS Chinese Craft Teacher, Ms. Chouchin Jiang, has agreed to offer Holiday Gift Workshop - Paper Flower Making for our parents during the school time. She will teach three different flowers making - rose, lily and peony. The material fee for each flower is $5. Maximum of 4 people can be enrolled at each class. She will bring some of sample end products and class signup sheet to the Parents' Meeting on October 4. I hope our parents will take this great opportunity to come make holiday craft.

Sincerely Yours,
